Iotawatt

IotaWatt tm is an open-hardware 14 channel WiFi connected electric power monitor. It’s based on the ESP8266 IoT platform using MCP3208 12 bit ADCs to sample AC voltage and current. IoTaWatt can log data locally to on-board SD card and post directly to Emoncms.org via WiFi.. There are no plans to discontinue the emonTx.

IotaWatt is open source so potentially will see more advancement in the future. It also works with a wide variety of CT's so you're not locked in. TED may have an advantage in being a 'cleaner' system that just works but people don't seem to have any problems w/ IotaWatt so that may be a non-issue. The IoTaWatt is made up of a central unit that processes incoming data, which receives signals from a variety of current transformers that are hooked up to electrical circuits. I don't know all the science behind them, but the current transformers sense the magnetic field around a wire and transform that into an amperage reading. First, the IoTaWatt is pre-configured and calibrated for the CTs sold by the maker, if you buy other models you may need to do some tweaking to get things just right. Secondly, the CTs purchased from the creator have 1.5m (5ft) of cable attached where many of the CTs sources from Asia only have 1m (3ft) of cable.
